That is all good ..... But Ottawa just pulled the ultimate Brian Burke ith the Duchenne trade.

They are going to keep thus years high ( top 10) draft pick,

only to end up giving the COL. the 2nd over all pick in 2019. It's Tyler Seguin all over again.

Ottawa would have been 10 times better off on this rebuild if they would have kept their picks and their 2017 1st round player and traded Turris directly with Nashville for Kanenov / Girard and a 2nd.

Rebuilding would probably be in the franchise's best interest, but there's too many things stacked up against it for it to ever happen:

1- No 1st round pick next year
2- Dorion and Boucher won't survive bottoming out back-to-back seasons
3- Geno Melnyk won't allow it... he'll want to scrape in as many extra bucks as he can by squeeking into the playoffs

number 3 is a good point. even outside the playoffs theyre having trouble filling seats. Didnt they remove a chunk? ....and that was after a deep playoff run. imagine how many seats theyll sell after a sell off and bottoming out. cant be too many.

I cant say I agree with the MTL and EDM proposals.

MTL has very little prospects already so why would they give away McNiven, Lindgren, a 1st and a 2nd for Brassard and Duchene? MTL needs a #2 Dman and a #1 Centre. If they decide to rebuild too, they are going to need those picks to see if they can draft and develop a C and a Dman.

EDM can get a winger in UFA. No need to give away picks. They may have to move out some contracts though.

he got edmonton's and montreal's 1st round picks for ottawa.

ottawa will have 3 top 10 picks in 2018.

seems legit.

Good blog today.

I’m sort of torn with what the Sens should do. There are good pieces there, but in todays game with the Cap, you can’t retool as easily. I do think it is possible to do a retool and have posted about it several times.

However, doing a complete rebuild around Stone and Chabot might be feasible. Trading Karlsson would suck, but if he is going to command 13-14 mill a year and uncertainty about his recover/injuries, it might be best to try and get assets for him. Maybe be able to move him to get some picks and move up in the draft in order to have 2 high picks for this year?

I’d still like to see the current core play well to exit the year and try to keep them intact. I think the core is good enough with Karlsson, Stone, Duchene, and Hoffman. It’s just everything else around them that is out of whack.

I feel this slump of a season is worse to watch than the one that got us Zibby in the draft. Back then we weren’t really passing on a decent core. They were more just falling out of the glory years. Now it feels like the built and need to tear down again.

I’d give the 1st for Hoffman, but you’d need to take salary back.

With a solid trade-deadline, a spectacular off-season and return to form by Duchene, Stone, Anderson, and Karlsson, this team could be competitive as soon as next season.

Van Riemsdyk - Duchene - Stone
Tkachuk-Brassard-Dzingel
Formenton-Pageau-White
Burrows-Thompson-Smith

Karlsson - Chabot
Ceci - Dahlin
Phaneuf-Wideman

JVR would never go to Ottawa as a UFA.

Also, that bottom 9 is bloody awful.

I agree with the broad strokes of this.

No one likes to see prime talent heading out the door. But sometimes, windows close. It takes blunt honesty to assess where a team truly is, and if there is even a shred of doubt about extending Karlsson -- by him or management -- then sell high, draft high, hope to be surging when Phaneuf and Ryan are off the books.

Yeah, it's a tough, tough call. Brutal. But sometimes, you gotta rip off the bandage and accept that the end of an era is there
